Eicha Yushvu Budud....
I just spoke with Michali online and she told me that there was a bomb in Yerushalayim this morning.
Makes you start thinking...all the family & friends there...is everyone ok?
But the truth is, we are all related. 10 were killed. Ten of our relatives.
Michali told me one of the people who were killed: Yechezkel Goldberg, writer for the Jewish Press, he worked with kids and family in crisis.
Another one of the kdoshim....
So sad....
Bsuros Tovos.

Snow!
Snow is so beautiful! Yesterday my husband and I drove out in it just as it was starting to come down strong, and it was so breath-taking to watch (from inside).
Today my husband decided he wanted to go see Brighton Beach covered in snow. We did it another time and it was soo nice. So we drove up nearby and there were two types of parking spaces: ones covered in snow and ones with meters.
The problem was...neither of us had a quarter on us.
So my husband decided to go over the snow...and got stuck.
The car wouldn't move. He digged around it and it just wouldn't move - it was stuck on some ice.
A teenager with a shovel was walking by and offered to help. We tried the shovel. The 3 of us pushed. Nothing helped.
We were working on it about 1/2 an hour when 2 Russian men walked by.
"Need help?" One asked. "I got stuck for 1/2 an hour last night."
My husband went into the car and pressed the gas. The two guys pushed (with only one had each!) and ta-da!! The car got out of the snow! I clapped and say "YAY!!!"
It was absolutely hysterical. We never did get to the ocean....
But I'm glad we had gone another time. It's a sight in my memory (and my camera) that's absolutely amazing. The place is covered in un-touched snow. The only footprint are of the birds, that are congregating on the ground. You can walk pretty close until they fly off.... what a wonder!
Snow it something I really enjoy.
Now I'm ready for spring.
What are your thoughts on this blog or on snow?

Writing my own Letter of Recommendation...
I asked a professor about a week or two ago if he could write me a letter of recommendation (that needs to be in by Feb 2) and he said ok. As it must be sent out this week, I emailed to see if he had done it. He asked me to send him where it should go and then asked me to write what I want in it and he will switch it around. Great. I got the work now.
So what do you do? Use your trusty computer. I did a search for "letter of recommendation for scholarship," found a sample, inserted my name and took out this and that - and tada! the letter is done and sounds much more professional that if I had written it (or probably him, too). Now let's just hope he actually sends it out....
all the best,
Mrs M
(PS thanks to Mrs. S for writing me one, as well! And by herself, so eloquently put, too!)

Tragedy Strikes
A 15-year-old boy was on his way to yeshiva early this morning. Now he has joined Avinu Shebashamayim.
Why do things like this happen?
Today in school I found out that one of my kid's older brothers was killed - I think in a car accident. The 2-year-old had no clue. What does she understand, now that she's gone home, only to find out she's staying by an aunt? Why will she think mommy & tatty are so sad? And will she understand why her big brother will never come home?
It's terribly sad. Boruch Dayan Emes.
May we share only good news.

And Even More on the HASC Concert....
I decided to check up on the JM board about ppl's opinions on the concert and THERE WERE A LOT. I didn't read them all, but it reminded me about nice stuff I decided to mention!
Sruly Williger did a Shlomo Carlebach thing that was really nice! He came out singing a story....It's the 'real' stuff, y'know? I was once at a concert that Yehuda came out singing a Carlebach song (not with a story, though) and it really is nice...cuz his music is the type not influenced by the outside world.
Lipa Shmeltzer did his song "gelt" on a video was great...he changed the words to mean that you should give your gelt to HASC cuz they help so many ppl....never saw/heard him before that I can remember...and now I want to find out more about his work!
shalsheles was great on stage. they sounded a bit different than the tape, to me, at first...but then it was "THEM." They played Esah Einei stunningly, which is the song which my husband walked down to the chuppa...
williger's nefew was cute....my cousin & aunt had spent sukkos with "the stars" in a hotel in E"Y for Sukkos and they said he was there, too, and absolutely adorable.
the videos of E"Y were really nice. made me wanna go "home."
guess that's all for now!

The HASC Concert
So what did I do with my FOUR free tickets, you may be wondering? (though probably not!)
I treated out myself, Q!, my aunt & cousin. We were lucky to find a ride there and arrived just when it was starting. We had seats pretty much all the way in the back...until we were able to move up. My aunt found "box seats" available (it turns out they weren't sold...the guys working there didn't mind us moving there), so that was much better. Before I get into the actual concert, I want to mention that I text mssged with Pazz, and she ended up sitting right "under" us. Q and I waived down to her & we were easily able to see each other! It was sooo funny!
Now for the actual concert.... MBD, Shalsheles, Sruly Williger and others...they were all fantastic! It was especially meaningful to me because the theme was Yerushalayim...my home away from home. It made me want to go back, but I really appreciated the beautiful video footage they showed of the holy land. The music was fantastic, as well!!
I had a lovely time!

So.....here I am, again. Shabbos was nice - restful. How was yours?
The pipes to our kitchen sinks froze, so we didn't have any water there from Friday morning till Shabbos afternoon. (Don't worry, we had water in our bathroom.) But it's a good thing we didn't eat home for Shabbos.
I'm tired. Why am I online? Tomorrow I have college and then the HASC concert. A few hockers will be there. Exciting. (More exciting than the singers?) I honestly am not sure who'll be singing there. Mindy's mentioned it - but I don't remember who. Shalsheles - I like their tapes, so I remembered their name.
I got my tickets free. So that's a plus. :)

What is Mrs. M. so Busy with??
My time online has seriously been reduced. This is what my schedule looks like at this poing:
Sunday- college from 9-3.
Monday- work 9-4, college 5-8:30
Tuesday - work 9-4, college 5-8:30
Wed & Thurs - work 9-4
Friday - student teaching 8:25-12:30
Shabbos - menucha...
This Sunday night I'm going to the HASC concert. I'm very excited! (even if it means less time for sleep.)
School was cancelled today. Also for Monday for a seminar I already took in college...
Hopes dashed.
They asked me from my school to do student teaching today so I could take off a different Friday for "trainings." They also said I have to come in Monday at 12:30 for "trainings." Don't I get enough trainings in college??? Apparently Not. Blech. So much for getting started on my college work! (yes, the homework has started!) At least I have off college Mon. night cuz it's Martin Luther King Day....
So...that's why I have been so busy lately...what's your excuse?? ;)

Time
My aunt sent me pictures recently.
All were of my oldest cousin's family in E"Y.
Their eldest just turned bas mitzvah....It's amazing how time flies.
Their youngest...is learning to breathe on her own. It's amazing how such a pitzy thing grows in a woman's stomach. My cousin had the baby a few weeks ago, at about 7 months pregnant. The baby is so tiny (born at under 3 lb.), but a little individual. Please daven that she should grow well.... Penina Batya bas Shoshana Rachel.

(#2) "He's My Brother...."
I'm listening to Five Towns Radio...and they're featuring the NEW Yeshiva Boys Choir. They mentioned that in this song Eli Gersner's 5-year-old brother sings...
So it got me thinking to a few (okay, more than a few?? I guess it was 3 1/2) years ago, when I was working in a bungalow colony where the Gerstner family stayed. A little Gerstner (about 7-8 at the time) was in my bunk and at the beginning of the summer she came over to me and asked, "Have you heard of Eli Gestner?" When I replied, "Yes," she said proudly, "he's my brother...."
LOL. She was sooo cute! At this poing, I think Eli had one or two tapes out...The kid even joked (yes, a 7 yr old!) about setting me up with Eli. LOL.

Aaah...the Joy of Books
My husband just dropped by a friend's house and while there picked up some books for me to read and I'm soooo excited! I've been running "low" on reading material (and I don't feel like spending bundles buying...), and now I have at least a month's worth of reading! Several Kids Speak, People Speak, Our Heroes and Our Amazing World (and the like!). A reader's dream....

Think Before You Judge
A friend of mine had leukemia. She underwent chemo and treatments that despite their terrible side effects, saved her life. Boruch HaShem she is doing very well, and has been for quite a while. But I just wanted to bring in a story she told me a while back.
Her hair was finally growing back in. She decided to ditch the wig (no, she's NOT married!) and wear her hair out, even though it was quite short... I don't remember the exact story, but basically on that Y"T she was walking over to a friend's house and some kids (goyim, I think, I hope) made fun of her "punky" hair style.
Now, if you saw her in the street at that time, you might think she was a "punk" who cuts her hair really short (no offense to anyone who has short hair...especially Mindy!...but this was a certain style)...and these insensitive kids made fun of her! And you know what this hair meant to her? It meant health!
We have to learn not to judge a person so quickly by the look of things...
We should also appreciate, B"H, all the gifts HaShem gives us.
(Oh, Perry...should this hock really belong to Gishmak??)

In response to Perry's question...I think it's because the mother needed to recover and with kn'h a bunch of kids hanging around her, it's hard to rest up! but he returned to mommy on Thursday so hopefully his speech with return to normal BE"H, too. By the way, this specific kids is ABSOLUTELY ADORABLY. He's delicious. My assistant says so, too. Now we don't play favorites...but sometimes we just wanna EAT HIM UP!
